Free Tablets for People With Disabilities: Programs, Apps & Resources

Strong Qualification Path: SSI recipients — a large portion of people with disabilities — automatically qualify for Lifeline. Most also receive Medicaid, providing a second qualifying pathway.

Qualifying Through SSI and Medicaid

People with disabilities have some of the strongest Lifeline qualification pathways available. SSI (Supplemental Security Income) — which provides cash assistance to individuals who are aged, blind, or disabled with limited income — is a direct Lifeline qualifying program. And because most SSI recipients also receive Medicaid, they have two simultaneous qualifying programs.

Even SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) recipients who don't receive SSI may qualify through:

  • Medicaid (available to many SSDI recipients after a waiting period)
  • Medicare Savings Programs (which include a Medicaid component)
  • Income-based qualification if household income is at or below 135% FPL
  • Any other qualifying program (SNAP, federal housing, etc.)
