Who Qualifies for a Free Government Tablet?

To receive a free or discounted government tablet in 2026, you must qualify for the federal Lifeline program, administered by the FCC and managed by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC). Qualification happens one of two ways: through program participation or through income.

Program-Based Eligibility

If you or any member of your household participates in any of the following government assistance programs, you automatically qualify for Lifeline:

Income-Based Eligibility

If you don't receive any qualifying program benefits, you may still qualify if your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Below are the 2025 income limits (updated annually):

Tribal Land Eligibility

Residents of qualifying Tribal lands receive enhanced Lifeline benefits — up to $34.25/month instead of $9.25. Additional qualifying programs include Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Tribally Administered TANF, Tribal Head Start (income-based), and Food Distribution on Indian Reservations (FDIR).

One Benefit Per Household Rule

Lifeline allows only one benefit per household — not per person. A household is defined as anyone living together and sharing income or expenses. Married couples, parents with dependents, and unrelated adults sharing living costs all count as one household. You cannot receive Lifeline through two different providers simultaneously.

Annual Recertification

Lifeline benefits are not permanent. You must recertify your eligibility every 12 months. USAC will notify you approximately 105 days before your benefit expires. If you don't recertify within 60 days of receiving a notice, you'll lose your benefit. You must also use your service at least once every 30 days to remain active.
